What History Forgets (4/10)

In a past made murky by time, no one can ever know. Historians and the rest of us pick up the pieces and try to make sense of it all.

This artwork incorporates a street map from a 1970 proto-Pride celebration called "Annual Reminder" on Christopher Street. The bold nearly 45 degree line between left and right sides hints at how our country is at war with its own past and ideologically at war with itself. 

Vertical, ribbon-thin, satin-like strips of saturated color subtly remind the viewer of the sparkly clothes of Trans and drag performers. The weathered fleur-de-lis print motif bordering the digital image hints at revolutionary France and the power of the people to create revolutionary change. 

At center-bottom-right, a pale angel seems to glow through the map's page. The angelic shape is a fractal, an organic shape created using numbers from the Stonewall Inn Uprising date (July 28, 1969). The artist used the numbers as variables to create a shape for the theme of the series, "Generation Fabulous."
